What is Drawing Game?

The drawing game — often called classroom Pictionary — is simple: one student draws a secret word on the board and their team races to guess it before time runs out. No letters, numbers or talking allowed for the artist. It is a favorite indoor game because it is funny, everyone can join in, and it rewards quick thinking far more than artistic talent.

This free version handles everything except the drawing. It picks secret words from 156 easy-to-draw words across animals, things, food, actions, places, sports and seasonal themes — or from your own vocabulary list. The drawer holds a Peek button to see the word while the class looks away, then a big timer starts. Tap “Guessed it!” to score a point, and the game moves to the next team. It makes a brilliant art class game and an even better vocabulary review.

How to play Drawing Game in class

  1. Make teams

Split the class into two to four teams and name them. Each team sends one artist to the board per turn.

  2. Choose words

Tick the categories you want, or add your own words — this week’s vocabulary, book characters or science terms.

  3. Peek at the word

The artist presses and holds “Peek” to see the secret word while everyone else looks away, then lets go to hide it.

  4. Draw and guess

Press “Start drawing”. The artist draws with no letters, numbers or gestures; the team calls out guesses before the timer ends.

  5. Score and rotate

Tap “Guessed it!” for a point, or let time run out to reveal the word. Press “Next team” for the next artist.

Variations to try

Vocabulary Pictionary

Use only your own words — science terms, story settings or history events — so drawing becomes review.

All-play rounds

Every team sends an artist at once for the same word; the first team to guess scores.

Silent teams

Guessers must write their answer on a mini whiteboard instead of shouting it out — calmer and fairer.

Draw it blind

For a laugh, the artist draws with their eyes closed or with their non-writing hand.

Paper version

Play in small groups with paper, taking turns to hold the peek button on a shared screen.

Teacher tips

  • Agree the rules first: no letters, numbers, talking or pointing at objects in the room.
  • Give younger classes 90 seconds and easy categories like animals and food.
  • Let the artist pass once per turn using “New word” if they are stuck.
  • Keep a spare marker at the board so turns change quickly.
  • Praise creative clues, not artistic skill — stick figures are welcome.

Drawing Game: FAQ

How do you play Pictionary in the classroom?

Split the class into teams. One student from a team secretly sees a word and draws it on the board while their team guesses before the timer ends. A correct guess scores a point, then the next team takes a turn.

How does the drawer see the word without the class seeing it?

The drawer presses and holds the Peek button while the class looks away. Letting go hides the word again. Keyboard users can press Enter on the Peek button to show and hide it.

Can I use my own vocabulary words?

Yes. Open “Add your own words”, type one per line, and tick “Use only my words” to play with just your list.

What are good Pictionary words for kids?

Simple nouns and actions work best: cat, pizza, rainbow, rocket, swimming, snowman. All the words in the generator are chosen to be easy to draw.

Is this an official Pictionary game?

No. It is an independent, free classroom drawing game in a similar style. Pictionary is a trademark of its owner and this site is not affiliated with it.
