What is Name Picker?

A random name picker takes the guesswork — and the arguments — out of choosing who goes next. Instead of calling on the same hands every time, you spin the wheel and let chance decide. Students know the choice is fair, and the spin itself builds a moment of suspense that keeps everyone paying attention.

This free name picker wheel is made for the classroom. Paste your class list once and it is remembered in your browser. Turn on “Remove each name after it is picked” so every student gets a turn before anyone is picked twice. The same wheel works for anything you can list: brain breaks, group numbers, reading tasks or the next question number. Picks use your device’s secure random number generator, so every name has exactly the same chance.

How to use Name Picker in class

  1. Add your names

Type or paste one name per line. Your list is saved in this browser only, so it is there next time you open the page.

  2. Choose how to pick

Leave “Remove each name after it is picked” on to give everyone a turn, or turn it off to allow repeats.

  3. Spin

Press “Spin the wheel” (or Space, or a presenter clicker). The wheel slows down and lands on a name with a celebration.

  4. Keep going

Picked names are listed on the side. When everyone has had a turn, press “Put everyone back” to start again.

Teacher tips

  • Keep “remove after pick” on during discussions so quieter students get their turn too.
  • Use Board mode so the whole class can watch the wheel spin.
  • Spin before you ask the question sometimes, and after you ask it other times, to keep everyone thinking.
  • You can delete the saved list at any time with “Clear list” — nothing is stored on our servers.

Name Picker: FAQ

Is the name picker really random?

Yes. Each pick uses your browser’s secure random number generator, and the wheel then animates to the chosen name, so every name has an equal chance.

Are my students’ names uploaded anywhere?

No. The list is stored only in your own browser on this device. It is never sent to us or anyone else, and you can clear it at any time.

Can I stop the same student being picked twice?

Yes. Keep “Remove each name after it is picked” switched on. Names return when you press “Put everyone back”.

How many names can I add?

Up to 200. For big lists, the wheel shortens long names, and the full name is always shown in large text below the wheel.

Does it work on a smartboard?

Yes. Tap the Spin button or press Space on a keyboard or presenter clicker. Board mode fills the screen.
