What is PE Games?
Good PE games keep every student moving, are easy to explain, and can be adapted to the space and equipment you have. Tag games and relays need almost nothing, while team games like Capture the Flag and Kickball build strategy and cooperation. The best physical education lessons mix a quick warm-up game, a skill focus and a team game to finish.
This page has 16 fun games for PE class, from classics like Red Light, Green Light and Sharks and Minnows to team games like Clean Your Room and Capture the Flag. Use the picker to choose a game, or the classroom timer for rounds and stations. Every game is listed below with its rules and equipment.
How to play PE Games in class
Check your space
Mark boundaries with cones and remove hazards. Filter the picker to games that suit your equipment.
Pick a game
Press “Pick a game” for a random game, or scroll the full list below and choose one that fits your lesson.
Explain and demonstrate
Read the rules aloud, then walk through one slow-motion round so everyone understands tagging and boundaries.
Time the rounds
Start the timer for each round. Short rounds with quick restarts keep energy high and give more students a turn as tagger.
Cool down
Finish with a calm game like Scarf Juggling or stretching before students return to class.
PE games with rules
Every game in the picker, with its equipment and rules.
Sharks and Minnows
Minnows run from one end of the space to the other while the sharks in the middle try to tag them. Tagged minnows become sharks.
Red Light, Green Light
Students move toward you on “green light” and freeze on “red light”. Anyone moving on red goes back to the start. First to touch you wins.
Everybody’s It
Everyone can tag and everyone can be tagged. Tagged players crouch down; they are back in if a free player high-fives them.
Freeze Tag
Taggers freeze players by tagging them. Frozen players stand with legs apart and are unfrozen when a teammate crawls through.
Capture the Flag
Two teams guard a flag on their half. Sneak into the other half and bring their flag home without being tagged. Tagged players go to jail until freed.
Relay Races
Teams race in turns: running, hopping, crab walking or dribbling a ball. Mix up the moves each round so every student can shine.
Four Square
Four players each stand in a square and bounce the ball into another square. Miss a bounce and you go to the back of the line.
Crab Soccer
Play soccer while walking like a crab — hands and feet on the ground, belly up. Low, silly and great for core strength.
Clean Your Room
Two teams throw soft balls onto the other side of a center line. When the whistle blows, the team with fewer balls on its side wins.
Hula Hoop Pass
Teams hold hands in a line and pass a hula hoop from one end to the other without letting go of hands.
Steal the Bacon
Two numbered teams face each other with an object in the middle. Call a number; those players race to grab it and get home without being tagged.
Octopus Tag
Fish run past the octopus. Tagged fish become seaweed: they stay rooted to the spot and wave their arms to tag others.
Obstacle Course
Set up stations — hop through hoops, crawl under a rope, weave cones. Time each run or let students design the course.
Duck, Duck, Goose
Sit in a circle. One player taps heads saying “duck”, then “goose!” — the goose chases them around the circle to the empty spot. Perfect for K–2.
Kickball
Like baseball, but the pitcher rolls a ball and the batter kicks it. Run the bases; catches and tags on the base make outs.
Scarf Juggling
Scarves fall slowly, so everyone can learn to juggle. Start with one scarf, then two, then try three.
Variations to try
Skill focus
Change how students move: hop, skip, gallop or dribble a ball during any tag game.
Indoor version
In a classroom or small hall, play walking-only versions and use Red Light, Green Light or Simon Says.
More taggers
For big classes, add a tagger for every six to eight players so nobody waits long to be involved.
Inclusive rules
Use “tagged players do five jumping jacks and rejoin” instead of elimination, so everyone keeps moving.
Station circuit
Set up four games as stations and rotate groups every few minutes using the timer.
Teacher tips
- Keep rules short and consistent; the same tagging rules across games save explaining time.
- Use soft balls and clear boundaries, and agree on a “freeze” signal before starting.
- Avoid long elimination: bring tagged players back quickly so everyone gets exercise.
- Rotate taggers and captains so the same students do not always lead.
- Adapt games for students with different abilities so everyone can take part fully.
