What is Would You Rather?

Would You Rather is a quick thinking game: students hear two options, choose one and explain why. Because there is no right answer, every student can take part, and the “why” turns a silly question into real practice in giving reasons — the same skill students need for opinion writing and persuasive speaking.

This page has 120 Would You Rather questions written for the classroom: nothing gross, nothing scary and nothing personal. There are decks for younger kids, for tweens and teens, for school and learning topics, and a Halloween deck for October. The voting board shows both choices in big text, counts the votes and animates the results so the class can see which side wins.

How to play Would You Rather in class

  1. Choose a deck

Pick Kids, Tweens & teens, School & learning or Halloween — or type your own questions as “choice | choice”.

  2. Choose how to vote

Count raised hands, send students to two sides of the room, or let students tap their choice on a smartboard.

  3. Show the question

Press Start. Read the question aloud, give a few seconds to think, then take the vote.

  4. Count the votes

Tap +1 (or press A and B) for each vote. The bars and percentages update instantly.

  5. Ask “why?”

Use “Pick someone to explain” to choose a student from each side to give a reason, then move to the next question.

Variations to try

This or that corners

Students walk to the side of the room that matches their choice. It adds movement and makes the vote visible.

Opinion writing warm-up

Students write one sentence stating their choice and two reasons, using “because” and “also”.

Change your mind

After two students explain, re-vote. Anyone who switched sides shares what convinced them.

Debate pairs

Pair students who chose different options and give them one minute each to persuade the other.

Class-made questions

Students write their own Would You Rather questions about a book, a historical period or a science topic.

Math tally

Record the votes for five questions and make a bar graph or work out fractions and percentages.

Teacher tips

  • Set the rule that every answer is respected — no laughing at anyone’s choice.
  • Ask for a reason, not just a vote. “Because…” is where the learning happens.
  • Use the sides-of-the-room vote after lunch when students need to move.
  • For younger students, read both choices slowly and show them with gestures.
  • The Halloween deck is a gentle, not-scary option for October parties.
