What is Word Games?

Word games are one of the easiest ways to make spelling and vocabulary practice fun. When the whole class works together to guess a hidden word, every student is thinking about letter patterns, vowels and word endings β€” and cheering when the word appears. Word games work for young readers learning short words, for English language learners building vocabulary, and for older students tackling tricky spellings.

This page has two word games for the classroom. Guess the Word is a friendly take on hangman: students guess letters to fill in the blanks, and every wrong letter pops a balloon instead of drawing anything grim. The class scores a point for every word solved; the teacher scores when all the balloons pop. Word Scramble shows a word with its letters mixed up, with an optional 30-second timer, while students race to unscramble it on mini whiteboards. Both games use graded spelling lists from kindergarten to grade 8, themed lists, or your own weekly spelling words.

How to play Word Games in class

  1. Choose a game

Pick Guess the Word for whole-class letter guessing, or Word Scramble for quick individual or team challenges.

  2. Choose your words

Use a graded spelling list, a themed list, science vocabulary with clues, or paste this week’s spelling words β€” one per line, with an optional clue after a bar.

  3. Play Guess the Word

Students take turns calling out letters. Tap them on the on-screen keyboard or type them. Wrong letters pop a balloon; β€œShow a letter” gives a free letter for one balloon.

  4. Play Word Scramble

Show the scrambled letters and start the timer. Students write their answer, then press Reveal to check.

  5. Keep score

In Guess the Word, the class earns a point for each word solved and the teacher earns one when the balloons run out. Can the class beat the teacher?

Spelling word lists

The graded lists built into the game. You can also choose animals, science vocabulary (with a clue for each word), Halloween or Thanksgiving words β€” or type your own.

Variations to try

Vocabulary clues

Add a definition after each word so students must understand the meaning, not just the spelling.

Team turns

Split the class into teams that take turns guessing letters; a team that completes the word scores a point.

Vowels cost extra

For older students, a vowel guess costs a balloon even if it is right β€” it makes them think about consonants first.

Scramble relay

Teams send one student at a time to write the unscrambled word on the board. First correct answer wins the point.

ESL picture link

For English learners, pair each word with a quick sketch on the board after it is solved to connect word and meaning.

Spelling test warm-up

Use this week’s spelling list in Word Scramble the day before the test.

Teacher tips

  • Encourage students to start with common letters like E, A, T and S β€” then talk about why that works.
  • After each word, ask a student to use it in a sentence.
  • Use clues for English language learners so the game builds meaning as well as spelling.
  • Keep the pace quick: if a word is too hard, use Reveal and move on.
  • Save your own list once β€” it is remembered in your browser for next time.

Word Games: FAQ

What are good word games for English class?

Guess the Word (a classroom-friendly hangman), Word Scramble, spelling bees, Word Chain and Pictionary-style drawing games all build spelling and vocabulary. The first two run on this page.

Is Guess the Word the same as hangman?

It plays the same way β€” guess letters to reveal a hidden word β€” but wrong guesses pop balloons instead of drawing a hanging figure, which makes it more suitable for school.

Can I use my own spelling words?

Yes. Choose β€œMy own words” and type one word per line. Add a clue after a bar, like β€œvolcano | a mountain that can erupt”.

Are these games good for ESL students?

Yes. The whole-class format means nobody is put on the spot, and clues help English learners connect each word to its meaning.

What grades are the word lists for?

There are lists for grades K–1, 2–3, 4–5 and 6–8, plus themed lists for animals, science vocabulary, Halloween and Thanksgiving.
